GPS for Soldiers – Civilian grade or DoD spec?

A recent GPS World article offers some expert advice regarding the use of civilian grade GPS-enabled devices, such as smart phones, ipads, etc., by United States military forces. 

One side presents the argument that existing equipment procured through the DoD process is big, bulky, battery-hungry, and just plain old-looking when compared to currently available civilian technology.  So why not save a bundle and provide civilian technology to our troops?  On the other hand there is the genuine concern that a savvy opponent could easily jam unencrypted civilian GPS signals, or worse, spoof false signals that could potentially result in mission failure and loss of life.

While the DoD should obviously be providing the most modern and efficient technology to our soldiers, and doing so at minimal cost, the fact remains that cutting corners can be costly in the end, especially when lives are on the line.  Read the full article here.
